Uploading from iMovie ’08 to YouTube HD

// December 22nd, 2008 // Uncategorized

Since YouTube announced they are now hosting HD videos (YAY!), i’ve been playing on my Mac with getting the optimum settings for high quality uploads. As a heads up for those also setting out on the HD adventure, i’ve used these settings with great results from my Xacti HD 2 and Flip Mino HD.

Hope this helps someone! :-)

Export using QuickTime menu

Input a name and select Quicktime Movie, then edit settins

This is what it should look like

Match these settings!

One word of caution – even on my quad core beast, these settings take a little while to encode! The end result is worth it though, and seems to be free of the sound sync problems i’ve experienced with other configs.

If you have any better settings, let me know! :-)

Hi, thanks for sharing your tips. Setting the bit rate audio setting to “Constant” eliminated my buddy’s audio sync problem with his HD video.

Just use the standard youtube uploader with the generated file!

I found your blog searching for iMovie 08 settings for Youtube. I was having some difficulty with the quality and reliability of my uploaded movies. Your settings work great … the improvement in quality is enormous! Thanks very much.

Hi Paul, and thanks so much for this HD upload info. I used it to upload my new videos on YouTube after all-day 99% failure on default settings (plus it was not HD) so finally your info helped so much. I wondered if there is some kind of update because I still have a tiny problem with moving objects as my text HD video jumps while script rolling and a live subject video has some kind of jagged-line artifacts if the camera or subject moves. Thanks for all help.

PS – using Cannon HV30 on iMovie 6.0.1

I'm using Canon HV30 on iMovie 08 Mac and praying your tips work. I did exactly what you posted. I've tried every setting out there in the past with the same results…no HD. It's uploading now. I'll come back later and tell you how it goes. =)

Okay I'm back. It uploaded to Youtube. Not only did it NOT upload in HD but also NOT in High Quality. I don't know what to do. Oh well, keep tryin'. Thanks for the post anyway. If it works for others I'm happy for them. =)

I LOVE YOU! Do you know how long and how many goes I've had trying and trying to export my video in any kind of quality? I'll tell you. A LOT!

This is 100% perfect! Almost looks better than it did on imovie! It didn't even take long to convert! So happy. Now if only youtube would stop being an arse and let me upload it..

    Thanks so much!

WOW!! Thank you for this! Not only is it very easy to follow and apply it works! Finally on youtube in HD! It does still take a while to upload , maybe an hour for a 5 minute video, but before it was like 6 hours and kept getting longer! Thanks again!
